Guess what? WE HAVE A WORKING TRANSMISSION! And this announcement comes from my WORKING COMPUTER! And Dois and I visited one of the pretty little islands and WE WENT DIVING! Do I sound excited? I am, but I'll stop yelling now. I will say this again; Dois is quite handy. He fixed the transmission by himself. I swear. We tried to hire a couple of mechanics but they both had day jobs and it made their time and attention too hard (and expensive) to get. So in the end Dois pulled it out, rebuilt it and re-installed our now mighty Velvet Drive. In addition to the transmission, we have also (with the generous help of friends) made a significant dent in our housekeeping chores:
We still have a few loose ends and the manifold is going to have to be a future project We are trying to work out the welding issues on the davits and the boom Vang, but we are mobile and have a new found feeling of both freedom and safety. Majuro is made up of people from many of the surrounding atolls, some that were affected by the nuclear testing we (America) performed here, as well as people looking for work or an education. They have a nice college here as well as elementary and high schools. It is a US protectorate since we took over in WW2 and receive US assistance. That money should trickle down to the people but I dont think so much. But despite the impoverished state of this place, the government offers a visit to a decent hospital or dentist for $20, all in, including all medicines (yes, really!). I'm not sure this is offered to us as American citizens or just anybody, and it is a bit of a crap shoot whether you get a great doctor or one who is merely skimming by, but Dois and I have been pretty lucky 2 out of 3 times. Dois had major surgery on his arm to remove an unwanted and scary looking item and won the lottery with a very good surgeons. The resulting divot on his arm would have cost a fortune anywhere else, but here it was covered, completely. I on the other hand was sent home with Tylenol and a children's allergy medicine from my first visit, only to return within a few days with pneumonia. My 2nd doctor was much better (as you can see I'm here to write about it). Dois and I are making plans to leave here, likely by Mid May. We've decided to head south to Fiji. Will give you more details later, but here's the important part. You can fly there and spend the best vacation ever sailing around or just anchored out at the most beautiful islands ever. Let us know when you want to come! Peace.
