We have a ton of work to do on Ashika, so being in California for the hurricane season, via the RV, is a lot like a vacation. We get to see my grandsons, Sawyer and Stryder and the weather is truly great here! I never appreciated it as much as I do now, after my year and a half in toasty Central America. We had a nice stay in Las Vegas on the way to California. Lorra and Bob were super gracious while we stayed at their house and the RV spent a week in the shop. But we were in a hurry to get to my son's house where my favorite little person was. Sawyer, my almost 2 yr old grandsonStryder, my 8 yr old grandsonNothing warms my heart more than hearing that child laugh. He's the essence of joy. My eldest grandson, Stryder, will be in California this coming weekend and at the ripe old age of eight, we will have some catching up to do. What else have we been doing with all our spare time? Well, Dois and I have also been working on the Vaquita Project. What what? Yeah, we want to save a porpoise from extinction. I know, sounds lofty, but I'm a woman with a plan. In a nutshell, I want to film the elusive and critically endangered porpoise for what may be the last years of it's existence. I'm trying to find ways to fund a couple of drones with remote viewing cameras as well as long range lenses. I'd like to invite volunteers aboard to help with "Vaquita Spotting" and "Drone Controlling". With a little luck, and lot's of work, we could end up with some great footage of a species that has very few photos of them alive, and most from a long distance away. The film could be used to help drum up even more support for the little "Sea Panda" The Vaquita frequently die in illegal gill-nets set for the endangered totoaba fish, as well as in gill nets set for sharks, rays, mackerel and shrimp. The animal only needs to brush up against a net to become entangled and drown. The babies are especially susceptible to entanglement and researchers are very concerned that if there are few young ones to grow into reproductive adults that this will lead to a more rapid decline. Finally, there is a link above on the right if you'd like to support the cause. The short term goal is to get enough of a kitty to fund an expedition of six months and extra camera equipment, the long term goal is to fund audio location equipment and bring in volunteer crew. I sure need find a way to accomplish our goals. We just can't let them go quietly into the dark.
Peace. Peace.
