After our successful entrance, Dois and I were lounging around relaxing, celebrating really, just watching the reefs begin their full showing at extreme low tide. From our relatively safe viewpoint, we began to slide into complete horror as we watched a large rock with a long reef attached, appear in what had been our path into this lovely lagoon. We must have just missed it, either because the tide was just high enough or because the luck fairies took pity on us again. Let me say to all boaters considering Boca Chica as a landfall; there are several uncharted reefs on the south east entrance. Stick to the path defined in the Serano guide and you will not end up in the fetal position that I did after realizing what that shorter route may have cost us.
We will follow the Serano guide waypoints out of here, because it is the safer path and because we are heading that direction. Boca has been a breath of fresh air. We listen to parrots and monkeys in the near by jungles and hiked through a well worn path trying to spot some of those noise makers, to no avail. The well worn path might have been the problem. I did see the largest most beautiful butterfly I've ever seen. If it had lighted on my hand it would have dwarfed it by twice, my head and it would have shaded me from the sun. Okay, but it was big.
Speaking of big.... this little guy was the size of my hand. Found him on the lovely little path at the top of this blog. Rocky and Jewel, stateside buddies, know how much I love these little creepies. Let me just say that I stay to the paths religiously (and carry a big stick, some call it a monopod).
The locals are very nice and welcoming to us, a refreshing change from their compatriots in the city. There is a laundress in town, a weather worn little woman with a toothless smile and countless laugh lines. She doesn't have a machine dryer, everything is dried on bushes all around her yard. The hard water does leave towels a little rough, but boy does she get things clean and smelling good. She will get out any stain, even if it means removing a little material. And she has the cleanest bushes in town.
Peace.
